The 2012 auction season opens with ART + DESIGN, an exciting collection of 20th century, modern and contemporary furniture, decorative pieces and art works by well-known European, American and Philippine artists and designers. Scheduled to go under the hammer on Saturday, 18 February at 4pm are vintage pieces ranging from statement chairs, pedigreed glass ware and ceramics, to hard to find console tables, cabinets, wall shelving units, and original paintings and fine prints that complement today’s interiors.

Noteworthy items include property from a Southampton estate such as an iconic, signed Frank Gehry ‘Cross Check’ chair produced by Knoll, a pair of Mies van der Rohe arm chairs by Palazetti, and a stunning ‘Murmansk’ fruit bowl designed by the legendary postmodern architect and designer Ettore Sottsass, founder of the 1980s Memphis movement. Also featured are original pieces by other noted names such as Alvar Aalto, Osvaldo Borsani, UP Zavody, and limited production items such as a curvy lounge set by Rosenthal’s Studio Line and productions by Artifort, and Ahrend de Cirkel.

Admirers of collectible glass and ceramic will be spoiled for choice with the range of sculptural accents and table accessories. These include a rare and important circa 1920s Steuben blue glass vase with an auspicious acid cut back water dragon design, mounted as a lamp; objets d’art by Lalique, Baccarat, and Daum; rare Lladro figurines; and English and French bone china.

The range of artworks are guaranteed conversation starters, headlined by ‘Labor’ a signed 1994 Robert Rauschenberg lithograph from his limited edition ‘Tribute 21’ portfolio. Pieces by a respected group of local artists including Jojo Lofranco, Bobby Nuestro, Rock Drilon, Salvador Cabrera, and Egai Fernandez will also be available.

ART + DESIGN coincides with Manila’s celebrated affordable art fair, Art in the Park; and Salcedo Auctions is once again pleased to have been invited by the Museum Foundation of the Philippines to host this year’s lecture.
