Salcedo Auctions and the heirs of the late Flipino visual artist Onib Olmedo are pleased to announce the appointment of Salcedo Art Management and Advisory, a division of the auction house, as the official representative of the Olmedo Art Estate.

In a joint statement, Salcedo’s President Karen Kua-Lerma and Gisella Olmedo-Araneta, the artist’s daughter, said: “This appointment shows the high regard, trust and confidence of one of the foremost names in Philippine art in the auction house. The mutual esteem that Salcedo and the Olmedos hold for one another makes it a perfect fit.”

The partnership is well timed as it coincides with Onib Olmedo’s 75th birth anniversary this year – the artist passed away in 1996 at the peak of his career. As a pioneer of figurative expressionism, Olmedo is considered by critics to be one of the most important Philippine visual artists of the 20th century. The brooding visages in his portraits and the quiet tension of his still lifes are seared in the public imagination; and his stylistic influence on a younger generation of artists remains strong. Olmedo’s works are represented in major institutional and private collections both in the Philippines and abroad.

In keeping with the wishes of the Olmedo family to expand the appreciation of the artist’s work to a wider audience, Bacolod, home of many discerning art collectors in the Visayas, has been selected as the first leg of a multi-city national and international tour to celebrate this important milestone.

“75 years: Celebrating Onib Olmedo,” an exhibition of fifteen works on paper that includes the artist’s distinctive ink washes together with his pastels, charcoals, graphites, and pens and inks, opens at Charlie’s Art Gallery (Italia Restaurant, 1 Ranol Bldg., 23rd – San Agustin Streets, Bacolod City) on Saturday, 5 May 2012 at 5pm. The show runs through 15 June 2012.
